• Session Five - Infrastructure

As part of the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class, we dedicate each month to exploring a different facet of our community. This month, the focus was on infrastructure—a vital element in supporting the growth and sustainability of our region. The day provided us with a comprehensive look at the infrastructure demands on a growing community, covering ports, airports, traffic, water, and sewer systems.

We began our day with a presentation by Mike Kozlosky and Abby Lorenzo, the Executive Director and Deputy Director of the Wilmington Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). They discussed the importance of forward-thinking, explaining how the MPO plans 25 years ahead to address our region’s transportation needs. Their work spans aviation, bicycles, pedestrian pathways, ferries, rail systems, public transportation, and roadways, ensuring that our infrastructure evolves alongside our community.

Next, we heard from Brian Clark, Executive Director of the NC State Ports Authority. He highlighted the critical role the port plays in our region’s economy and discussed ongoing upgrades and expansion projects, including aspirations to enhance rail connectivity. Our visit to the port was an eye-opening experience as we toured the facilities and witnessed the scale and complexity of operations firsthand.

We then shifted focus to the city’s five-year infrastructure improvement plan, presented by Thom Moton, Deputy City Manager, and Heather Padgett, Deputy Budget Director. They outlined the strategic investments being made to address the needs of our growing population and maintain essential services.

Mark Hairr, Executive Director of Wave Transit, provided valuable information about public transportation. He shared the challenges of maintaining and improving transit systems while planning future routes and stops to meet community demands. His discussion underscored the delicate balance between operational costs and the need for expanded services.

Our visit to Wilmington International Airport (ILM) offered a glimpse into the future of air travel in our region. Jeffrey Bourk, the airport’s Executive Director, shared updates on the extensive upgrades underway to accommodate growing passenger demand. These improvements include expanded capacity, upgraded accessibility, enhanced energy efficiency, and increased parking options. He also announced exciting new partnerships with Sun Country Airlines, JetBlue, and Avelo Airlines, which will provide more non-stop flight options.

Lastly, we visited the Northside Wastewater Treatment Plant, where Kenneth Waldroup, Executive Director, and Tristin Rickabaugh, Operations Supervisor, gave us an overview of the infrastructure required to manage the region’s wastewater. Their presentation highlighted the intricate processes that ensure the effective treatment and safe disposal of wastewater—a critical service often taken for granted.

This day was a powerful reminder of the interconnected systems that keep our community thriving. The dedication of the professionals we met and the strategic planning underway will ensure that Wilmington continues to grow sustainably and remain a vibrant place to live, work, and visit.
