Career and Leadership Development Academy Cohort Two, Hospitality Day
Throughout the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce’s Career and Leadership Development Academy ten month program, each of the eight middle schools are assigned a day to write about their experiences. 37 students from across all eight New Hanover County middle schools participated in the third industry exploration day in Cohort Two, Hospitality, on November 1 at Holiday Inn Resort Lumina on Wrightsville Beach. In addition to learning about the careers at the resort, they had the opportunity to hear from other entrepreneurs in the hospitality space. Below is the third blog write up from Cohort Two of the Wilmington Chamber of Commerce’s Career and Leadership Academy experience.
Caleb:
I thought it was very cool. My favorite part was the speeches. It was really cool to learn about peoples origin and what they do for a living. Something I remember from the speeches was to never drop your dreams. And one other thing I remember was that in life there will be problems but you can not give up. Overall this trip was the best out of all of the ones we have had so far. I rate it a 9 out of 10. The few best things I enjoyed was the trivia, the hotel spends $9.2 million to manage the hotel each year. And the housekeepers clean more than 38,000 rooms every year. “In life there will be distractions but you have to be focused on your goal.” Some helpful things are: Finding good friends to support you throughout the time, You should practice all the skills you know because they will help you in everything you will need for your passion.
Jeremy:
The trip to holiday Inn resort lumina on wrightsville beach was nice and full of adventures. Somethings that i learned was that it has many departments like:
-
Food and beverage
-
Housekeeping
-
Front desk
-
Sales
-
Maintenance
-
Management
-
Activities
-
Transportation
Also something that I thought was interesting was that it was opened in 1999,they have 147 associates, they use about 948 rolls of toilet paper each year, and that there are 132,228 hotels in the USA.
For me I felt like I was taught more about behind the scenes of hotels and what really goes back there to run a hotel. Also I learned more about each job which was interesting to learn about and it was fun exploring the hotel.
Amira:
The trip was very cool to Holiday Inn resort. The hotel was built in the 70s and rebuilt in 1999 and it took one year to rebuild, they have 4 pools 3 outside and one inside,it cost 350 for one night. They have three shifts 7pm-3am,3am-11pm,11pm-7am -In 2020 the hotel spent 20 million dollars into the hotel .They have 147 associates that work at the holiday inn resort .
I Learned that most hotels have brands and some don't . The hotel that became the first to gain a big population was Stay America.
hospitality: they are nice, kind, and they get money
A quote the man said when he was sharing with us is never use the word why because its defensive - another thing-respect it's the key
A saying the girl speaker said is to ,start small then grow big
A saying I heard that Webo said was “never give up in life”
I thought what he said was important to me becaues, if you give up you will never want to try the dream or your passion if you give up so you have to keep going and stay positive.
