Planning Commission Revises Special Use Permit

The Chamber’s work to revise the New Hanover County Special Use Permit (SUP) came to fruition last night when the Planning Commission adopted many of the sought-after changes to the permit that is required for businesses looking to locate on property zoned industrial. Site selectors and businesses looking to locate in New Hanover County had criticized the permit for not having a defined timeline and being vague about what materials may be required to obtain a permit. In short, the SUP was turning off businesses from even considering Wilmington as a location.

The new permit adds a 55-day timeline, places the primary burden of proof on the opposition to a business seeking to come to New Hanover County, and created 86 specific definitions for limited, general and intensive industries that align with national industry standards.
