Forbes Ranks Wilmington in Top 5 in “America’s Smartest Cities”

Forbes magazine has rated Wilmington fifth among the country’s 380 metro areas in its latest “America’s Smartest Cities” survey. Researchers Joel Kotkin and Mark Schill looked at a region’s “brainpower” and how it had changed since 2000 to rank the metropolitan areas by starting with the growth rate in the number of residents with at least a bachelor’s degree from 2000 through 2013 (25 percent weighting in final score). But since the places that post the highest growth rates tend to be those starting with low levels of educational attainment, they gave greater weight to the percentage point increase in the share of the population that is college-educated over that span (50 percent), and factored in the share of educated people in the population in 2013 (25 percent).

The communities that finished ahead of the Port City on the “brainiest” list were St. George, Utah; Bloomington, Indiana; Ocean City, New Jersey; and Auburn-Opelika, Alabama.
